Phainon is a 5-star Physical Destruction hypercarry who builds Coreflame, transforms into Khaslana, and then takes eight special actions while the rest of the team temporarily leaves the field. His best build focuses on reliable CRIT Rate, strong Skill damage, and teammates who can target or advance him before he transforms.
This guide is updated for Honkai: Star Rail Version 4.4. Phainon’s most recent rerun ended on July 14, 2026 during Version 4.3, but his core build remains valid in 4.4. No future rerun had been officially announced as of the July 21 update.
Version update: Version 4.4 is now live. The new 4.3 relic set As Navigator Isee Sees It remains Phainon’s highest-ceiling option in specific Cerydra, Cyrene or E2 teams, while a strong Wavestrider Captain set is still close enough that most players should not refarm immediately.

🔥 Quick Answer: Best Phainon Build
Best Phainon build:
Use 4-piece As Navigator Isee Sees It for the highest ceiling, or keep 4-piece Wavestrider Captain if it has better CRIT substats. Pair either set with Arcadia of Woven Dreams and Thus Burns the Dawn. Aim for 90–100% CRIT Rate in combat, at least 150% CRIT DMG before his Talent buff, and choose SPD or ATK boots according to your support rotation.
| Build Slot | Best Recommendation | Practical Alternative |
|---|---|---|
| Relic Set | As Navigator Isee Sees It | Wavestrider Captain |
| Planar Ornament | Arcadia of Woven Dreams | Rutilant Arena |
| Light Cone | Thus Burns the Dawn S1 | On the Fall of an Aeon S5 |
| Body | CRIT Rate | CRIT DMG after reaching a reliable CRIT Rate |
| Boots | SPD for action-advance tuning | ATK% in Cerydra or non-tuned teams |
| Sphere | Physical DMG | ATK% with clearly better substats |
| Rope | ATK% | — |
| Substats | SPD if needed → CRIT Rate → CRIT DMG → ATK% | Prioritize useful rolls over set perfection |
| Stable Team Core | Phainon + Cerydra + Sunday | Add sustain or a third amplifier |
| Highest-Ceiling Core | Phainon + Cyrene + Cerydra | Add Remembrance Trailblazer, Tribbie or another suitable flex |

⚙️ How Does Phainon Work?
Phainon has a setup phase and a transformation phase. During setup, he uses his Skill and receives targeted support abilities to collect Coreflame. At 12 Coreflame, he can use his Ultimate and transform into Khaslana.
Coreflame and Khaslana Transformation
- Phainon’s normal Skill grants 2 Coreflame.
- He can use his Ultimate at 12 Coreflame.
- He can store up to 3 excess Coreflame for the next rotation.
- All enemies gain Physical Weakness after the Territory is deployed.
- Other teammates become Departed and cannot act during the transformation.
- Khaslana receives 8 special actions at a fixed Speed equal to 60% of Phainon’s base Speed.
- He gains a new Basic ATK, two enhanced Skills and the Scourge resource.
- The transformation ends with an automatic Final Hit.
The base-Speed rule is the reason Thus Burns the Dawn is unusually valuable. Relic SPD helps Phainon take more setup actions before transforming, but it does not directly accelerate Khaslana’s fixed actions. His signature Light Cone increases base Speed, so it can affect the transformed sequence.
Which Abilities Generate Coreflame?
Phainon gains 1 Coreflame when he is the target of an ally or enemy ability. When an ally targets him, he also gains a temporary CRIT DMG buff. The important rule is whether the ability targets or includes Phainon—not whether the ability is described as single-target or teamwide.
Do not confuse a passive aura with a targeted ability: a buff, heal, shield or action advance can generate Coreflame when Phainon is included as a target. A passive field or aura that never selects him usually does not provide the same Coreflame value.
Khaslana’s Enhanced Actions
| Action | Main Function | Best Use |
|---|---|---|
| Creation: Bloodthorn Ferry | Blast damage and 2 Scourge | Use when you need a safe, reliable way to rebuild Scourge |
| Calamity: Soulscorch Edict | Forces enemies to act, reduces incoming damage and launches a counter | Use when multiple meaningful enemy actions will increase the counter’s value |
| Foundation: Stardeath Verdict | Consumes Scourge for high Skill damage and cleanses Phainon | Use at 4 Scourge whenever the remaining action count allows it |

🏺 Best Relics for Phainon
As Navigator Isee Sees It is Phainon’s highest-ceiling relic set in the current environment, but its advantage is conditional rather than universal.
- 2-piece: increases ATK by 12%.
- 4-piece: entering combat or using Skill grants 18% Skill and Ultimate DMG, stacking up to three times. One stack is removed at the start of the wearer’s turn or after using Ultimate.
The set becomes especially valuable when Phainon can use more enhanced Skills than normal. Cerydra can duplicate an important Skill, Cyrene can extend the transformation, and E2 can add an extra action after a four-Scourge Stardeath Verdict. Those conditions help Phainon build and use the three-stack bonus more efficiently.
Wavestrider Captain remains the practical default for many existing builds. Phainon’s supports naturally target him, so the set is easy to activate, and its ATK bonus remains useful through his transformed sequence.
| Your Situation | Recommended Set | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Starting the relic farm from zero | As Navigator Isee Sees It | Best future-facing ceiling |
| Using Cerydra, Cyrene or E2 | As Navigator Isee Sees It | More enhanced Skills and extra actions improve stack value |
| Already own strong Wavestrider pieces | Keep Wavestrider Captain | The performance gap is small enough for substats to decide |
| Only have mixed pieces | Best 2-piece combination | Useful CRIT rolls are better than forcing a weak four-piece set |
Relic farming rule: Do not replace a high-quality Wavestrider set with an average Navigator set. A small theoretical set advantage cannot compensate for several lost CRIT or ATK substat rolls.
Other Usable Relic Sets
- Scholar Lost in Erudition: a convenient CRIT and Skill-oriented transitional option.
- Champion of Streetwise Boxing: usable when older Physical pieces have exceptional substats.
- Mixed 2-piece sets: ATK, CRIT or Physical DMG combinations are acceptable during farming.
Evaluate the number of useful substat rolls rather than judging a piece only by its set name. The site’s relic stat optimization guide explains how to compare CRIT, Speed and ATK rolls more accurately.
🪐 Best Planar Ornaments
| Planar Set | Recommendation | Why It Works |
|---|---|---|
| Arcadia of Woven Dreams | Best overall | When Phainon’s three allies are Departed, he receives the maximum 36% missing-ally DMG bonus |
| Rutilant Arena | Very close alternative | Boosts the Basic and Skill damage that makes up most of his transformed rotation |
| Space Sealing Station | Early-game placeholder | Simple ATK bonus, but not worth farming specifically for an endgame build |
Arcadia is the cleanest best-in-slot recommendation, but Rutilant Arena is close enough that a strong existing set does not need to be replaced immediately.

💡 Best Light Cones for Phainon
| Rank | Light Cone | Best Use |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Thus Burns the Dawn S1 | Best personal damage, base Speed and DEF ignore |
| 2 | On the Fall of an Aeon S5 | Best fully free option |
| 3A | A Trail of Bygone Blood S5 | Strong CRIT Rate option when your build lacks consistency |
| 3B | Something Irreplaceable S1 | Good standard-banner alternative when its conditional effect is reliable |
| 5 | Under the Blue Sky S5 | Accessible fallback in fights with smaller enemies |
Thus Burns the Dawn
At S1, Phainon’s signature provides high base ATK, 12 base Speed, permanent 18% DEF ignore, and a large damage bonus after using his Ultimate. The base-Speed increase is the unique part: it can improve the timing of Khaslana’s fixed transformed actions, while ordinary flat or percentage Speed does not function as a direct transformed damage stat.
On the Fall of an Aeon S5
Aeon is the best free choice. Phainon can stack its ATK bonus, and his Territory applies Physical Weakness, making the Weakness Break damage effect realistic in many boss encounters. Its main drawback is opportunity cost when another Destruction DPS also needs it.
Players sharing Herta Bonds across several teams can use the Herta Store Light Cone priority guide before committing to S5.
Pulling rule: Aeon S5 is strong enough for normal endgame clears. Pull Thus Burns the Dawn when Phainon is a long-term main DPS, not because E0 Phainon is incomplete without it.

📊 Phainon Main Stats, Substats and Speed Tuning
Best Main Stats
| Relic Slot | Recommended Main Stat | Alternative |
|---|---|---|
| Body | CRIT Rate | CRIT DMG after accounting for every combat buff |
| Boots | SPD in tuned action-advance teams | ATK% in Cerydra or non-tuned teams |
| Planar Sphere | Physical DMG | ATK% with clearly better substats |
| Link Rope | ATK% | — |
Recommended Endgame Targets
| Stat | Practical Target | Important Note |
|---|---|---|
| CRIT Rate | 90–100% in combat | Include Sunday, Trace and Light Cone buffs; avoid overcapping |
| CRIT DMG | 150%+ before Talent buff | 160–180%+ is a mature target, not a minimum requirement |
| ATK | 2,200–2,600+ with SPD boots | ATK-boot builds can naturally reach higher values |
| SPD | Base or team-specific tuning | Build Speed for setup actions, not for transformed damage |
Substat priority: SPD if required for the rotation → CRIT Rate → CRIT DMG → ATK%.
Do not intentionally farm HP or DEF substats. Phainon’s transformation already gives him major durability, and offensive rolls are far more valuable.
Should Phainon Use SPD or ATK Boots?
Use SPD boots when:
- Phainon must act before Sunday or Bronya.
- An extra setup Skill materially accelerates the first Ultimate.
- Your support order has been tested in the actual team.
- You can keep a strong CRIT ratio after equipping SPD boots.
Use ATK boots when:
- Cerydra already improves the team’s Speed and Skill output.
- You are not using a strict double action-advance rotation.
- Your ATK boots have substantially better CRIT substats.
- You use the signature Light Cone and value its base-Speed effect during transformation.
136/135/134 Speed Tuning Example
A commonly used Sunday + Bronya sequence is:
Phainon 136 SPD → Sunday 135 SPD → Bronya 134 SPD
This can let Phainon act, receive Sunday’s advance, act again, receive Bronya’s advance, and generate Coreflame rapidly before transforming. It is a rotation template, not a universal breakpoint. Small differences in Eidolons, Light Cones, buffs and combat setup can change the required values.
Review the HSR Speed breakpoints guide before sacrificing high-quality ATK boots for a copied Speed number.

🧬 Phainon Trace Priority
Recommended resource-conscious order:
Skill → Talent → Basic ATK → Ultimate
Skill is the clearest first priority because it improves Phainon’s normal Skill and major transformed Skill damage. After that, Talent, Basic ATK and Ultimate all contribute to the transformation, so the exact order is less important than the original article suggested. Players with enough materials can level those three together.
| Trace | Priority | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Skill | Highest | Improves setup damage and the most important transformed Skill |
| Talent | High | Improves transformation-related scaling and buffs |
| Basic ATK | High | The enhanced Basic is part of Scourge generation |
| Ultimate | High, but last when materials are limited | Improves the automatic Final Hit |
Major Traces
- March to Oblivion: grants starting Coreflame and improves the next setup after transformation.
- Bide in Flames: grants a large damage bonus after receiving an ally heal or shield and converts ally Energy restoration into Coreflame.
- Shine with Valor: provides stacking ATK across repeated transformations.
Unlock all three major Traces before spending heavily on minor levels. The HSR Ascension Planner guide can help organize materials.
🔁 Phainon Rotation and Gameplay
Setup Phase
- Use Phainon’s Technique when its two-point cost is worthwhile.
- Use Phainon’s Skill for 2 Coreflame.
- Target or advance Phainon with Sunday, Bronya, Tingyun, Cerydra or another support.
- Apply any shield, healing or Energy restoration that activates Bide in Flames.
- Reach 12 Coreflame; hold briefly for up to 3 overflow only when it does not cost an endgame cycle.
- Use the Ultimate after the important buffs are in place.
Transformation Phase
- Begin with the Scourge already granted by transformation.
- Use Stardeath Verdict at 4 Scourge when possible.
- Use Bloodthorn Ferry to rebuild 2 Scourge safely.
- Use Soulscorch Edict when several enemy actions will meaningfully strengthen its counter.
- Track the remaining Khaslana actions so you do not hold Scourge too long before the Final Hit.
Simple rotation:
Target Phainon → build Coreflame → apply final buffs → transform → spend 4 Scourge → rebuild Scourge → repeat before the Final Hit.
When Should You Delay the Ultimate?
Delay briefly when one more support action gives a major CRIT buff, action advance, shield, heal or Energy restoration. Do not delay for an entire extra team rotation unless the next enemy wave or phase specifically rewards it.

🤝 Best Phainon Teams
Phainon’s best teammates perform at least one of three jobs: directly target him for Coreflame, advance his setup actions, or apply buffs that remain valuable while his allies are Departed.
Highest-Ceiling Extended Transformation Team
| Slot | Character | Role |
|---|---|---|
| DPS | Phainon | Transformed hypercarry |
| Support | Cyrene | Extends transformation and supports Scourge economy |
| Support | Cerydra | Strengthens and duplicates important Skill damage |
| Flex | Remembrance Trailblazer, Tribbie or another compatible amplifier | Adds the missing team utility or damage multiplier |
This is the highest-ceiling direction when Cyrene and Cerydra can extend Phainon’s transformed output. It also gives As Navigator Isee Sees It more opportunities to build and use its stacks.
Best Stable General Team
| Slot | Character | Role |
|---|---|---|
| DPS | Phainon | Main DPS |
| Support | Cerydra | Skill amplification and Speed utility |
| Support | Sunday | Action advance, CRIT support and Coreflame generation |
| Sustain/Flex | Dan Heng • Permansor Terrae, Huohuo or a third amplifier | Long-fight security or more damage |
This is the safest general recommendation because Sunday shortens the setup phase while Cerydra improves transformed Skill output. Use a sustain when the encounter survives multiple transformations.
Sunday and Bronya Dual-Advance Team
Phainon + Sunday + Bronya + sustain or amplifier
The team uses repeated action advances to reach 12 Coreflame quickly. Bronya should usually act after Sunday so her Skill buff remains available when Phainon transforms. The team is powerful but more sensitive to Speed order and Skill Points.
Apocalyptic Shadow Team
Phainon + Sunday + Ruan Mei + Cerydra or sustain
Ruan Mei is particularly useful in Apocalyptic Shadow because Phainon’s high Toughness damage benefits from Weakness Break Efficiency. Outside Break-focused stages, Cerydra, Cyrene or another direct amplifier may provide more value.

🆓 Best F2P Phainon Build
| Build Part | F2P Recommendation |
|---|---|
| Light Cone | On the Fall of an Aeon S5 |
| Relics | Wavestrider Captain, Scholar or the strongest mixed set |
| Planar | Arcadia of Woven Dreams or Rutilant Arena |
| Body / Boots | CRIT Rate / SPD |
| Sphere / Rope | Physical DMG / ATK% |
| Team | Phainon + Remembrance Trailblazer + Tingyun + Lynx |
- Remembrance Trailblazer adds action support and a damage multiplier Phainon may otherwise lack.
- Tingyun targets Phainon, buffs ATK and interacts with Bide in Flames through Energy restoration.
- Lynx supplies targeted healing and can increase enemy attention on a Destruction unit.
- Gallagher can replace Lynx when stronger Skill Point economy and offensive tempo are more important.
Bronya is an excellent upgrade when obtained from the standard banner. More low-investment lineups are covered in the best F2P teams guide.
🏁 How Good Is Phainon in Endgame?
Memory of Chaos
Phainon is best against one boss or a small group of durable targets. His high single-target and Blast multipliers make him a strong Memory of Chaos carry when the team can complete the encounter within one or two transformations.
Pure Fiction
He can clear Pure Fiction, but his performance depends more heavily on the stage. Distributed damage may be wasted on low-HP enemies, and continuous wave spawning can be less comfortable than it is for dedicated Erudition carries.
Apocalyptic Shadow
Phainon performs well because his Territory applies Physical Weakness and his enhanced actions deal high Toughness damage. Ruan Mei becomes more valuable when the boss rewards fast breaking. See the Apocalyptic Shadow guide for mode-specific scoring principles.
Long Encounters
His personal durability is excellent, but his supports may run out of HP, Energy or buff uptime across repeated setup phases. A sustain such as Huohuo or Dan Heng • Permansor Terrae becomes more valuable when the encounter cannot be ended quickly.
🌟 Is Phainon Good at E0? S1, E1 and E2 Value
E0
Phainon is complete at E0. His transformation, Physical Weakness application, crowd-control resistance, self-healing and major damage mechanics are all available without Eidolons.
S1 — Thus Burns the Dawn
S1 is the cleanest first personal upgrade for most dedicated Phainon players. It improves base Speed, base ATK, DEF ignore and transformed damage in one slot.
E1
E1 raises the base-Speed inheritance of Khaslana’s actions from 60% to 66%, can increase it further as enemies are defeated, and grants 50% CRIT DMG after the Ultimate. It is strong, but usually comes after S1 and key supports.
E2
E2 grants 20% Physical RES PEN and an extra action after a four-Scourge Stardeath Verdict. It is the major vertical-investment breakpoint and improves the value of As Navigator Isee Sees It.
Recommended investment order: E0 → key supports → S1 → E1 → E2.

❌ Common Phainon Build Mistakes
| Mistake | Why It Hurts | Better Approach |
|---|---|---|
| Stacking CRIT DMG before CRIT Rate | Large transformed attacks become inconsistent | Reach 90–100% in-combat CRIT Rate first |
| Forcing Navigator with weak pieces | Lost substats erase its small set advantage | Keep a strong Wavestrider set |
| Copying 136/135/134 without testing | The actual action order may differ | Tune the complete team, not one isolated number |
| Transforming before the final buffs | Departed allies cannot correct the setup | Apply action advance, CRIT, shield and Energy effects first |
| Using Soulscorch against inactive enemies | The counter gains little value | Use Bloodthorn Ferry to rebuild Scourge |
| Using Stardeath Verdict below 4 Scourge | You lose its strongest extra damage component | Reach 4 Scourge when the remaining actions allow it |
| Running sustainless in long fights | Supports become vulnerable between transformations | Add a sustain when the fight survives multiple Ultimates |
❓ Phainon Build FAQ
What is Phainon’s best relic set?
As Navigator Isee Sees It has the highest ceiling, especially with Cerydra, Cyrene or E2. Wavestrider Captain remains nearly as strong and is often the better real-world choice when it has superior CRIT substats.
What is Phainon’s best Light Cone?
Thus Burns the Dawn is his best Light Cone because it provides base Speed, high base ATK, DEF ignore and a large transformed damage bonus. On the Fall of an Aeon S5 is the best fully free alternative.
Should Phainon use SPD or ATK boots?
Use SPD boots when a tuned Sunday or Bronya rotation gives Phainon another setup Skill. Use ATK boots in Cerydra teams or when the team does not rely on a strict action-advance order.
How much CRIT Rate does Phainon need?
Aim for 90–100% CRIT Rate in combat. Include Sunday, Trace and Light Cone buffs in the calculation so the build does not exceed 100% unnecessarily.
Does Phainon need Sunday?
No, but Sunday is one of his best setup supports because his Skill and Ultimate target Phainon, provide Coreflame-related value and improve CRIT consistency. Bronya, Cerydra, Cyrene, Tingyun and Remembrance Trailblazer are viable alternatives or partners.
What is the best F2P Phainon team?
Phainon, Remembrance Trailblazer, Tingyun and Lynx is a practical low-cost team. Gallagher can replace Lynx, while Bronya is a strong upgrade if available.
Should you pull S1 or E1 first?
S1 is the cleaner first personal upgrade for most players. Choose E1 first only when Phainon already has a strong alternative Light Cone or when you plan to continue toward E2.
When is Phainon’s next rerun?
No future rerun had been announced as of July 21, 2026. His latest banner ran from June 24 to July 14, 2026 during Version 4.3.
